 The EFT standard is intended for operators wishing to promote their involvement in projects combining organic farming and fair trade.

 

An innovative approach for a comprehensive standard

  • Simplicity: Ecocert offers a unique guarantee combining organic farming and fair trade, facilitating consumer choice.
  • Traceability and transparency: Ecocert conducts on-site inspections across the value chain, from producers to retailers; product information must be available for consumers online.
  • Economic and social responsibility: Businesses must ensure the durability of the value chain to enable the economic development of producers and workers.
  • Organic certification demanded for all products.
  • Minimum percentage of fair trade ingredients to be reached:
       > Food: minimum 25% of agriculturally-sourced ingredients are fair trade.
       > Cosmetics: minimum 5% of all ingredients originate from fair trade.
       > Textiles: minimum 70% of fibres are fair trade.

Impact on producers

The EFT standard involves a long-term commitment from producers to strengthen the expected impact of the procedure:

  • Ethics: assurance for producers to sell at a guaranteed minimum price, and for workers to receive a decent salary.
  • Social: proper working conditions, unions or similar organisations, the establishment of a development fund to finance technical, economic and social measures to benefit producer communities.
  • Health and Environment: production methods making responsible use of natural resources, mindful of producers' and workers' health.
  • Development: the process involves a lasting partnership with buyers and the empowerment of producers.
